   Quick-start Guide

  Stock Charts

They're called 'Quick Charts' because of the ease of viewing these graphs, but you can spend hours poring over all the data available.  These charts allow you to track and compare key factors such as sales, earnings, analyst recommendations, technical indicators, news and much more.

  • View historical and intraday price performance and volume for US equities and Funds.

  • Variable time resolutions (intraday to five-year, from minute resolution to weekly resolution)

  • Chart types : Line, Candlestick, Mountain, Range Bar

  • Plot moving averages and Technical Indicators.

  • Compare to other securities.

1 Price Ranges

This displays the price ranges for the selected day.  Move your mouse left and right over the chart and the prices will change.

In the example above, Dell opened for trading on January 8th at $28.3 and went as high as $28.52 before closing at $28.31.  23 million shares traded hands that day.

2 The Charts

The upper chart displays the price history of the security.

Along the bottom (X-Axis) is the time frame, which you can change under the Display Options.  Along the right side (Y-Axis) is the price range.

If you choose to display Splits, Dividends, or Earnings, they appear as small icons to mark the day.

The lower chart displays

3 Events and Averages

You can see on the chart when the company paid dividends, reported earnings, or had a stock split.  Check the appropriate box and press 'Go' to display each on the chart.

Moving averages can show you the trend of a security.  You can view them by entering a number in one of the two boxes (labeled #1 and #2) and pressing 'Go'.  20 days is common for short-term trends, while 200 is more suitable to long-term trading.

4 Comparisons

Get some perspective.  You can compare your security with up to three others, by entering their ticker symbols here.

In our example, you could enter 'HPQ' and 'IBM' to see how Dell's stock performed against Hewlett-Packard and IBM.

For an even broader comparison, select an index to compare against. Then press 'Go'.  Did this security outperform the S&P500?

5 Display Options

These charts can show you a lot so get in close!  Select a larger chart size and press 'Go' to see all the action.

The Time Period box allows you to choose from one day to five years and between.  Traders will want to see day-to-day trends while buy-and-holders will benefit from a grander scale.

Choose your type of chart here.

  • Line - shows the closing price.

  • Range - a vertical bar shows the high, low, and close.  learn more

  • Candlestick - red and green quickly show how a stock did since it opened.  learn more

  • Mountain - line with color for readability.

6 Technical Analysis Methods

Beneath the primary chart is another smaller chart.  This is your technical analysis graph.  When you first visit Quick Charts, this will be trade volume. (how many shares changed hands)

Change this by clicking your mouse on the box showing 'Volume', selecting another method from the list, and pressing 'Go'.

Explain these options to me.
